professional cheerleaders: story weather

it was like three shooting-stars, each at the height of their respective trajectories, colliding.

a year ago today heavy petting, drunken boats and demon attack formed a super group (demon attack called it a super-nova group). they decided to write, record and perform songs together; they vowed to take over the world. they called themselves professional cheerleaders and they were doomed from the start.

professional cheerleaders was a band for one afternoon. what started with enthusiasm ended in bickering and, ultimately, violence. their egos to blame, according to mutual acquaintances and rock critics.

how professional cheerleaders describe the afternoon:

drunken boats: they're just too unprofessional. they never wanted to do a second take no matter how shitty the first was.
heavy petting: those guys are assholes to work with. but they're ok as friends.
demon attack couldn't be reached for comment because he is dead.

the music recorded that afternoon was thought to be lost. but then it was uncovered in a shoebox titled "my fondest memories" found in demon attack's closet after his death.

and you can download it for free.

halloween parade: 2nd grade

october reminded me we have a halloween album. we (satan's joystick) finished it just before halloween last year (2007) and probably only gave out a hand full of copies (cd's) on halloween. so i thought i would let the few followers of our site know that it is available and is probably better to listen to it leading up to halloween instead of after. also it's really scary. download

look out for snakes! preview

you probably didn't even know that we recently signed a new band to killerbuds.net -- look out for snakes! they're in the process of recording their first album, tentatively titled hang-glider, and they've emailed me a sneak peak at one of their soon-to-be hit songs, tentatively titled partly cloudy. give it a listen, and if you think they should scrap the project or that we should drop them, let us know before it's too late.

breaking news!

demon attack has been found dead in his mansion.
after repeated attempts by friends and loved ones to contact demon attack by phone and mail, dw drove out to demon attack's secluded mansion only to find demon attack dead.
dw: there was blood all over the place.
could this be why there was blood on the recent letter he sent?
dw also found tapes and tapes of unreleased music. so look for new demon attack music even though he's dead.
no official word on whether the death was suicide or murder.

letter from demon attack

a little over a week after demon attack emailed me his new album, i received a regular-mail letter from him. well, i was in west virginia and i just got back last night. so it could have been there for days. i assume so, since he claims to have sent it last week. it didn't surprise me to get a letter from him after he finished his album because handwritten letters have always been his preferred method of communication. with me at least. we've corresponded on dozens of occasions by mail. even when we used to be next door neighbors. he'd still put a stamp on an envelope and have the post office process it. i think he just likes the idea of writing a letter, sealing it up, and hanging it on his mailbox with a clothespin for the mail(wo)man. so i wasn't at all surprised to get his letter. the envelope had red fingerprints on it. i assumed that he had been finger painting or something. i didn't imagine that they were bloody fingerprints. but they were, i realized after a closer inspection. i didn't have time to take the envelope down to the lab on 17th for dna and fingerprint tests, but i'm positive they were his bloody fingerprints. i opened up the envelope and found this letter, which i've taken the liberty of scanning for this blog.

i don't think demon attack will mind that i'm posting this on the internet. we're pretty close -- demon attack and i. so he'll understand why i'm posting this. maybe you, the reader, don't understand why i'm posting this. first of all, it's for demon attack. when he reads this, i think he'll know that all of us killer buds care about him as an artist and as a person. we know that his "demons" affect him emotionally in ways we don't understand, but we also know that this struggle is necessary in order for him to write and record such fantastic music. so maybe reading this will help demon attack in some way. second, i'm posting this for the fans. they deserve to see the side of demon attack that doesn't show up in his music or in his press releases or in his photo shoots. knowing the real demon attack makes the music that much better. and lastly, i'm posting this for me. i try to make it a rule to separate my personal relationships from my business relationships. but the truth is that demon attack is a dear friend of mine, and i don't publicly acknowledge this fact very often.

Avant Rock Dog Walk #1 - Mathematical Mind

We've been all over this city. With headphones.
A B C D E F G H... a pretty female voice sings the alphabet as I leash Beulah up. This is gonna be some trip.

Nico Muhly is an indie kid that calls himself a composer. That sounds kind of smug, but it's not meant negatively. He's got the resume, I guess. His compositions, including a recent Violin Concerto, have been performed by lots of big orchestras in lots of big cities. He works with Philip Glass. He has also worked with Bjork and Antony and some of his Bedroom Community labelmates. His two albums so far are hybrids, sort of. Classical music that an indie rock crowd might like.

So, this lady singing the alphabet beautifully is the first sound on Nico Muhly's "Mothertongue". Beulah can't hear it, but she likes classical female vocals. This reminds me of the only thing I know by Stockhausen, "Stimmung". Now she's singing addresses. Ah, this first movement of Mothertongue is called Archive. This woman's mind is in sleep mode, maybe, filing. It sounds mathematical, like programming language sort of, but the vocal parts are layered neatly. Strange, but i like it. Still archiving as we arrive at the park. I've heard phone numbers, some cliches, things you remember subconsciously. This sounds like it would be boring, but there's a lot going on. Buzzing, mathematical mind. Like Beulah's. She found a tennis ball in the river!!! Proudest of accomplishments.

Part 2 begins with a shower running. The mind is in a much calmer, less coherent state. Murmuring, but unintelligible. Waking up, I think. B is getting slower. Sad, realizing she's getting older more quickly than me. We started this year pretty much the same age, but now I'm 29 and she's almost 35! She's got a gray beard.

Part 3 - Breakfast is being prepared and our protagonist's mind (there does seem to be a narrative forming here) is preparing too. The instrumental music is stronger here than in the previous parts. Sounds a lot like some of Steve Reich. It's getting more and more intense and there is now some anxiety in the vocals. I can't tell if there is another person, or if it's everyday anxiety, but things get a little dark here. Communication seems more taxing. Oh... this is Part 4 already. And it's called Monster. Whoa. I don't know what to make of this. From a peaceful morning to nervous dissonance. More numbers. There are a bunch of monuments to soldiers in this park. A probably homeless man is reading beneath one of them. (I explained to my nephews last week the difference between "hobos" and "bums". K said, neither term is really appropriate. My nephew suggested "unsheltered gentlemen".) Beulah walks right up to him to see if maybe he's got some bacon. He doesn't and doesn't seem interested in petting her, so she ditches him.

That's it. The piece called Mothertongue just ended. Just like that. Things got crazy and scary and Boom. Quiet. I'm not sure what this last movement is up to, I admit. But it was damn interesting. Intense. I wouldn't be surprised if this were meant as a musical response to a chapter or page or sentence in Ulysses. 20 minutes in someone's mind and a pretty neat presentation I'd say. The album Mothertongue has two other pieces on it, but i'll check them out later. Beulah wants to play with this squeaky tennis ball. Dearly.

finally, a killer buds blog

it's finally happened. just what everyone has been waiting for.

why is this exciting? probably it's not. but what if you've been checking the site every day for updates. only to notice that we only put new stuff up every month or so. but you understand, since projects take time, so you keep checking back. well, now with our blog we can write about all sorts of stuff more often and have new things on the page all the time. we can announce upcoming projects and share previews of things that are nearing completion.

also, i think this is especially exciting because the only two people that aren't killer buds that come to this site can give us feedback on the website and on our projects.

last of all, i'm sorry that you have to see that "blogspot" bar across the top. i can't figure out how to put it somewhere else. at least everything else looks sort of the same.
